A seven-night rhythm of evening prayer for you and your household.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
The Lord Almighty grant me a quiet night and a perfect end. Amen.
O God, make speed to save me.
O Lord, make haste to help me.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and shall be forever. Amen.
Merciful God, in this day I have stumbled in thought, word, and deed.
I confess my pride and my self-reliance,
my impatience and my forgetfulness of Your presence.
I ask Your mercy through Jesus Christ.
Silence…
The Lord is gracious and full of compassion,
slow to anger and rich in love.
As far as the east is from the west,
so far has He removed my sins from me.
Psalm 91:1–2, 14–15
He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”
“Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.
He will call on me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble,
I will deliver him and honor him.”
Psalm 4:1, 8
Answer me when I call to You,
my righteous God.
Give me relief from my distress;
have mercy on me and hear my prayer.
In peace I will lie down and sleep,
for You alone, Lord,
make me dwell in safety.
Matthew 11:28–29
“Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”
Into Your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit.
For You have redeemed me, Lord God of truth.
Tonight I lift before You my household, Lord:
Watch, dear Lord, with those who wake or weep this night.
Give rest to the weary,
bless the dying,
soothe the suffering,
shield the joyous,
and enfold us all in Your love.
Lord, now let Your servant depart in peace,
according to Your word;
for my eyes have seen Your salvation,
which You have prepared in the sight of all people:
a light to reveal You to the nations,
and the glory of Your people Israel.
Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
Be present, O merciful God,
and protect me through the silent hours of this night,
so that I who am wearied by the changes and chances of this fleeting world
may rest upon Your eternal changelessness;
through Jesus Christ my Lord. Amen.
May the peace of God surround this dwelling,
the mercy of Christ guard my sleep,
and the Spirit’s breath renew my soul.
Amen.
Amen.
Most merciful Father, forgive me.
I have sinned against You today
through ignorance, through weakness,
through my own deliberate fault.
Restore me through Christ, I pray.
Silence…
As high as the heavens are above the earth,
so great is Your love for those who fear You.
As far as the east is from the west,
so far have You removed my sins from me.
Psalm 121
I lift up my eyes to the hills—
where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.
He will not let your foot slip—
He who watches over you will not slumber;
indeed, He who watches over Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.
The Lord watches over you—
the Lord is your shade at your right hand;
the sun will not harm you by day,
nor the moon by night.
The Lord will keep you from all harm—
He will watch over your life;
the Lord will watch over your coming and going
both now and forevermore.
Psalm 16:7–11
I will praise the Lord, who counsels me;
even at night my heart instructs me.
I keep my eyes always on the Lord.
With Him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.
Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices;
my body also will rest secure,
because You will not abandon me to the realm of the dead,
nor will You let Your faithful one see decay.
You make known to me the path of life;
You will fill me with joy in Your presence,
with eternal pleasures at Your right hand.
John 14:27
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.
I do not give to you as the world gives.
Do not let your hearts be troubled
and do not be afraid.”
Into Your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit.
For You have redeemed me, Lord God of truth.
Keep watch, Lord, over my household tonight:
Lord, now let Your servant depart in peace,
according to Your word;
for my eyes have seen Your salvation,
which You have prepared in the sight of all people:
a light to reveal You to the nations,
and the glory of Your people Israel.
Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
Keep me as the apple of Your eye;
hide me under the shadow of Your wings.
Preserve me, O Lord, while waking,
and guard me while sleeping,
that awake I may watch with Christ,
and asleep I may rest in peace. Amen.
Amen.
Lord Jesus, I confess that I have wandered today.
I have sought my own way more than Yours.
Forgive me, restore me, and abide with me.
Silence…
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just
to forgive us our sins
and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9)
Psalm 23
The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
He makes me lie down in green pastures,
He leads me beside quiet waters,
He refreshes my soul.
He guides me along the right paths
for His name’s sake.
Even though I walk through the darkest valley,
I will fear no evil,
for You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
Surely Your goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
Psalm 131
My heart is not proud, Lord,
my eyes are not haughty;
I do not concern myself with great matters
or things too wonderful for me.
But I have calmed and quieted myself,
I am like a weaned child with its mother;
like a weaned child I am content.
Israel, put your hope in the Lord
both now and forevermore.
John 15:4
“Remain in me, as I also remain in you.
No branch can bear fruit by itself;
it must remain in the vine.
Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.”
Into Your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit.
For You have redeemed me, Lord God of truth.
Good Shepherd, abide with me and with my household tonight:
Lord, now let Your servant depart in peace,
according to Your word;
for my eyes have seen Your salvation,
which You have prepared in the sight of all people:
a light to reveal You to the nations,
and the glory of Your people Israel.
Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
Abide with me, Lord Jesus, for the night is at hand,
and the day is now past.
As the night watch looks for the morning,
so my soul looks for You, O Christ. Amen.
The almighty and merciful Lord,
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,
bless me and keep me. Amen.
Amen.
Lord of light, today I have allowed shadows to grow in my heart.
I confess words spoken in haste, love withheld,
and times when I have chosen comfort over courage.
Forgive me, cleanse me, and illumine me with Your light.
Silence…
“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (John 1:5)
Psalm 27:1, 4–5, 13–14
The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid?
One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek Him in His temple.
For in the day of trouble He will keep me safe in His dwelling;
He will hide me in the shelter of His sacred tent and set me high upon a rock.
I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.
Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.
Psalm 139:11–12
If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,” even the darkness will not be dark to You; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to You.
John 8:12
When Jesus spoke again to the people, He said,
“I am the light of the world.
Whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
Into Your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit.
For You have redeemed me, Lord God of truth.
Christ my Light, shine on me and on my household tonight:
Lord, now let Your servant depart in peace,
according to Your word;
for my eyes have seen Your salvation, which You have prepared in the sight of all people:
a light to reveal You to the nations, and the glory of Your people Israel.
Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
O Lord, support me all the day long of this troubled life,
until the shadows lengthen,
and the evening comes,
and the busy world is hushed,
and the fever of life is over,
and my work is done.
Then in Your mercy grant me safe lodging,
a holy rest, and peace at the last;
through Jesus Christ my Lord. Amen.
May Christ, the true Light,
shine upon me this night and always.
May the peace of God guard my sleep,
and the Spirit’s breath renew my soul.
Amen.
Amen.
Almighty God, tonight I lay before You the fears I carried today.
I confess my reliance on my own strength,
my anxiety over things beyond my control,
and my slowness to trust in Your care.
Forgive me, restore me, and be my refuge.
Silence…
“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” (Psalm 46:1)
Psalm 46:1–3, 10–11
God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.
He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth.”
The Lord Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.
Psalm 62:5–8
Yes, my soul, find rest in God;
my hope comes from Him.
Truly He is my rock and my salvation;
He is my fortress, I will not be shaken.
My salvation and my honor depend on God;
He is my mighty rock, my refuge.
Trust in Him at all times, you people;
pour out your hearts to Him,
for God is our refuge.
Luke 12:32
“Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.”
Into Your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit.
For You have redeemed me, Lord God of truth.
Lord of hosts, surround my household with Your presence tonight:
Lord, now let Your servant depart in peace,
according to Your word;
for my eyes have seen Your salvation,
which You have prepared in the sight of all people:
a light to reveal You to the nations,
and the glory of Your people Israel.
Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
O God, Your unfailing providence sustains the world I live in and the life I carry.
Watch over me through this night.
Grant me rest in Your love and rise with me in Your strength, through Jesus Christ my Lord. Amen.
May the Father of life pour out His grace on me,
may the Son surround me with His peace,
may the Spirit breathe new life into me.
Amen.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

O Lord, make haste to help me.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and shall be forever. Amen.
God of compassion, I confess the ways I have hidden from You today.
I have kept fears unspoken,
carried burdens I did not lay before You,
and turned my eyes from Your presence.
Forgive me, Lord who sees, and hold me close.
Silence…
“You are the God who sees me,” she said,
“I have now seen the One who sees me.” (Genesis 16:13)
Psalm 139:1–6, 11–12
You have searched me, Lord, and You know me.
You know when I sit and when I rise;
You perceive my thoughts from afar.
You discern my going out and my lying down;
You are familiar with all my ways.
Before a word is on my tongue
You, Lord, know it completely.
You hem me in behind and before,
and You lay Your hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
too lofty for me to attain.
If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me
and the light become night around me,”
even the darkness will not be dark to You;
the night will shine like the day,
for darkness is as light to You.
Psalm 121:5–8
The Lord watches over you—
the Lord is your shade at your right hand;

the Lord will watch over your coming and going
both now and forevermore.

Lord, now let Your servant depart in peace,
according to Your word;
for my eyes have seen Your salvation,
which You have prepared in the sight of all people:
a light to reveal You to the nations,
and the glory of Your people Israel.
Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
Visit this dwelling, O Lord,
and drive far from it all snares of the enemy.
Let Your holy angels dwell with me to preserve me in peace,
and let Your blessing be always upon me;
through Jesus Christ my Lord. Amen.
The peace of the Lord Christ guard my heart,
the love of the Father hold my soul,
the presence of the Spirit watch my sleep.
Amen.

Eternal Lord, I lay down this day before You.
I confess my fears, my failures, my striving, and my sins.
I also lay down my victories, my joys, and my labors.
Receive them all, and give me Your rest.
Silence…
“For I am convinced that neither death nor life,
neither angels nor demons,
neither the present nor the future,
nor any powers,
neither height nor depth,
nor anything else in all creation,
will be able to separate us from the love of God
that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:38–39)
Psalm 131
My heart is not proud, Lord,
my eyes are not haughty;
I do not concern myself with great matters

like a weaned child I am content.
Israel, put your hope in the Lord
both now and forevermore.

Your right hand upholds me.

according to Your word;
for my eyes have seen Your salvation,
which You have prepared in the sight of all people:
a light to reveal You to the nations,
and the glory of Your people Israel.
Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
Be our light in the darkness, O Lord,
and in Your great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night;
for the love of Your only Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.
May the Lord of peace Himself give me peace
at all times and in every way.
The Lord be with me.
Amen.
